Combined clinic

SPECIALIST FEEDING SUPPORT & TENSION RELEASE

Two experts. One appointment. Helping you get to the bottom of feeding challenges sooner.

When breastfeeding feels difficult, families deserve timely, holistic support.

Our clinic combines expert feeding support with paediatric cranial osteopathy in a single appointment, helping you get to the root of feeding challenges sooner — without waiting weeks between appointments.

Why a combined appointment?

Many families come to see Andrea for feeding support and then find out that their baby may also benefit from assessment for tension, oral function and  body imbalance. Likewise, many families attending cranial osteopathy are experiencing feeding difficulties.

Traditionally, this means booking two separate appointments and often waiting weeks between them.

We created our combined clinic to bring both specialists together in one room, at the same time, so families can access joined-up support sooner.

  • Sometimes feeding difficulties are related to positioning and attachment.

  • Sometimes tension may be playing a role.

  • Often it's both.

By assessing feeding and tension together, we can build a more complete picture and create a plan tailored to your baby and family. When tension is identified as a contributing factor, treatment can begin immediately, helping families access the support they need without waiting between separate appointments.

Please note: Some families have multiple factors contributing to their feeding challenges. Whilst we can often address feeding and tension concerns together within the joint clinic, families with concerns around milk supply, pumping, weight gain or a more complex feeding history may benefit from an additional one-to-one breastfeeding consultation with Andrea, either before or after the joint clinic. This allows time for a more in-depth assessment and ensures that you receive the most appropriate, personalised support.

Who is this clinic for?

This clinic may be particularly helpful following:

  • Caesarean birth

  • Forceps birth

  • Vacuum-assisted birth

  • Very quick birth

  • Long or difficult labour

However, tension can sometimes be present following straightforward vaginal births, too. It can be caused by baby's positioning in utero (such as back to back position, head tilted to one side etc.) or by the birth process itself.

  • 'Strong' neck - baby holds their own head from birth

  • Not opening their mouth wide

  • Tongue always staying low (when they cry or sleep)

  • Sleeping with their mouth open

  • High palate

  • Head and face asymmetries

  • Rolling onto their side when placed on their back ('banana shaped babies')

Who is this clinic for?

Early signs of tension in babies:

Your baby may benefit from our joint clinic if they:

  • Struggle to latch or stay latched

  • Click during feeds

  • Seem to "chomp" or bite with their gums

  • Have a shallow latch

  • Pull away from the breast or arche their back during feeds

  • Have a preference for turning their head to one side

  • Feel unusually tense or unsettled

  • Show signs of reflux

  • Feed very frequently but never seems satisfied

  • Have slow weight gain

  • Feeds feel painful

The Birth Preparation Company for pregnant women looking for antenatal courses and breastfeeding support in Norfolk

What clients say...

"My husband and I have just completed The Birth Preparation Company’s antenatal classes. Andrea is absolutely wonderful – so kind, approachable and knowledgeable. The course covers so much content, but in a really digestible way, with a mixture of information-led and hands-on learning. The fact that Andrea is a practising midwife too means that she has that extra level of experience and understanding. We now feel so much more informed and ready for our little one’s arrival – with the added benefit of meeting some lovely Mum and Dad’s-to-be. We would absolutely recommend these classes. We might not all be lucky enough to have Andrea deliver our babies, but her support and guidance as part of this course is the next best thing!"
